RESTAURANT REVIEW: M's Seafood Bistro at Le Méridien Dubai Hotel

M's Seafood Bistro in Garhoud can be found opposite Dubai AirportM’s Seafood Bistro, the European seafood restaurant based at Le Meriden Dubai, has been proving so popular with reviewers and diners alike that we decided it was high time to check it out for ourselves.

Our first impression was immediately positive. Close attention has been paid to creating a pleasant and professional European dining-style ambience which would clearly appeal to both the hotel’s business guests and Dubai’s discerning residents.

But don’t be too startled by the rather bizarre choice of photographs dotted around the restaurant, depicting a glamorous lady in various poses with a large fish. These were apparently commissioned specifically for the restaurant and the neighbouring Beef Bistro hosts similar images featuring some livestock.  These eccentric images don’t really sit too well with the general high level dining experience the venue promises, but the staff appear to be quite fond of them as part of the restaurant’s special identity.

Quirky pictures aside, the restaurant’s menu showcases classic fine dining with a strong European influence. Trained to a high level, Chef Yvan Rocher is French and we were looking forward to sampling some of his finest cuisine.

M's Seafood Bistrol special Crispy Sea Scallops served with light parsnip mousse and smoked emulsion As a nice twist, the customary bread basket upon arrival included freshly baked pretzels and white cheese toast served with a chive sauce. For starters we opted for a hefty portion of wonderfully warming and flavoursome Crab & Vegetable spring rolls served with cucumber slaw and a curry dip. Although our second starter, the Peruvian Hammour Ceviche was sharp and refreshing, it had a slightly overpowering kick to it.

Keeping in line with the restaurant's emphasis on fresh seafood, we opted for a simple Cod in the Pan dish and Crispy Sea Scallops as our main course. The latter came beautifully presented with a mild serving of light parsnip mousse and smoked emulsion. The Cod dish was perfectly cooked and the lovely lemon butter sauce complimented the fish wonderfully. We also chose an array of accompaniments which reflected the best of French and Italian cuisine – from a rich ratatouille to Italian potato gnocchi and risotto. The creamy Porcini mushroom risotto was particular good, and is also temptingly offered as a main dish served with red mullet fillet (perhaps next time…).

M's Seafood Bistro cheesecake proved palatable but very richFor dessert, we chose a home-made cheesecake as well as M’s profiteroles with vanilla ice cream. The cheesecake was very rich but a palatable enough treat whilst the profiteroles were disappointingly bland and unappealing. The chocolate soufflé is supposed to be the real star of the Bistro’s dessert menu, but this requires a bit of time for preparation, time which sadly we did not have to spare that day.

The restaurant was rather quiet in the afternoon, which meant that we got more attention from the waiting staff than we would normally like, but apparently it picks up in the evenings. With its attractive setting and tasty food, we can understand why M’s Seafood Bistro holds such appeal as a high-end restaurant.  As a bonus for those on a budget, the restaurant also offers a lunch deal where you can get a starter, local fish or NZ striploin, garnish and dessert of the day all for a measly 99 aed, which is very reasonable considering the generally high quality of the food.
